The Travel Gig Packing List Every AV Tech Needs
March 29, 2026 · FreelanceAudioVisual.com
You just got the call: three-day corporate show in Phoenix, fly in Tuesday, fly out Friday. Here's what goes in the bag — and what stays home.
The non-negotiables
- Multitool (checked bag only — TSA will take your Leatherman)
- Flashlight (a good one, not your phone)
- Black electrical tape (2 rolls minimum)
- Sharpies (black and silver)
- Ear protection (custom molds or quality foams)
- Comfortable black shoes (you'll be on your feet for 12+ hours)
- All-black wardrobe (enough for one extra day in case of delays)
- Phone charger and battery pack
- Cable tester (if you're audio)
The "I'm glad I brought this" tier
- Small tool roll (mini screwdrivers, hex keys, barrel connectors, adapters)
- iPad or laptop with show files pre-loaded
- Gaff tape (small roll — the venue will have it, but yours is faster)
- RJ45 crimp tool and a few connectors (if you're doing any network)
- Personal headphones or IEMs for sound check reference
- Snacks (load-in catering is unpredictable)
- Ibuprofen (your back will thank you)
What to leave home
- Full tool kit (the shop or venue will have tools)
- Personal lighting or audio gear unless specifically requested
- Anything you'd cry about losing in checked luggage
Pro tips
- Ship heavy gear ahead. If you need your own console or processor, UPS it to the venue 3 days early. Don't check a Pelican case and pray.
- Pack a day bag. Separate carry-on with your laptop, charger, show docs, and a change of clothes. If your checked bag gets lost, you can still work day one.
- Photograph your cases. If TSA opens your bag and rearranges everything, photos make repacking faster.
- Keep receipts. Every cab, every meal, every baggage fee. You're billing these back.
The best road techs pack light and pack smart. Everything in your bag should either help you do the job or keep you comfortable while doing it. Everything else is dead weight you're hauling through airports.
