Streaming and Hybrid Events in 2026: What's Changed
March 31, 2026 · FreelanceAudioVisual.com

Remember when every general session needed a full streaming rig? That wave crested in 2023 and has settled into something more sustainable. Here's where hybrid events stand in 2026 and what it means for freelance AV techs.
The current state
About 40% of corporate events now include some form of remote component. But the definition of "hybrid" has changed. It's rarely a full parallel production anymore — it's usually one of these:
- Recorded for on-demand. Camera feed captured, edited post-show, distributed via internal LMS. Lowest complexity.
- Live-streamed keynote only. Main stage gets a proper webcast; breakouts are in-person only.
- Full hybrid with remote Q&A. Both audiences participate in real time. Highest complexity and budget.
What techs need to know
NDI is everywhere now
Network Device Interface has become the default for getting video between devices on the same network. If you're not comfortable with NDI routing, source identification, and bandwidth management, get there fast. It's in everything from PTZ cameras to vMix to display processors.
Dante + AES67 for audio
The audio side has standardized on Dante for most corporate work. Know how to configure Dante Controller, set up multicast flows, and troubleshoot clock issues. AES67 interop matters when you're bridging between Dante and Livewire or Ravenna ecosystems.
Encoding quality matters more than resolution
A clean 1080p60 stream with proper bitrate (8-12 Mbps for a talking head, 15-20 for motion-heavy content) looks better than a poorly encoded 4K stream. Focus on encoding settings, not just resolution.
Redundancy is expected
For any live stream with more than 100 remote viewers, clients expect a backup encoder, a backup internet connection, and a monitoring dashboard. If you're quoting streaming services, build these into the price — don't make them line-item surprises.
The opportunity
Techs who can handle both the in-room production AND the streaming workflow are billing 30-40% more than single-discipline specialists. If you're an audio tech who also knows OBS, vMix, or Wirecast, you're significantly more valuable than someone who only does one.
Hybrid isn't going away. It's just getting more refined. The techs who invested in streaming skills during the pandemic boom are now the ones getting called for the premium corporate work.
