Is ETCP Certification Worth It in 2026?

ETCP — the Entertainment Technician Certification Program — has been the gold standard for rigging certification in live entertainment since 2005. But is it worth the time and money for a working freelancer? Let's break it down.

What ETCP covers

There are two tracks: Arena Rigging and Theatre Rigging. Both test your knowledge of load calculations, rigging hardware, safety standards, and industry best practices. The exam is 150 multiple-choice questions, proctored, and you need a minimum score to pass (they don't publish the exact threshold).

The cost

  • Exam fee: ~$400-500
  • Study materials: $100-300 (books, practice exams)
  • Recertification every 5 years: ~$200 + continuing education hours
  • Total first-year investment: roughly $700-800

Who benefits most

ETCP pays for itself fastest if you work in:

  • Arenas and large venues that require ETCP-certified riggers on site
  • Union shops where ETCP is a differentiator for call order
  • Insurance-sensitive environments where venues require proof of qualification
  • Corporate AV companies that bid on contracts requiring certified crew

The career impact

In practical terms, ETCP does three things:

  1. Gets you past the filter. Many venue RFPs require ETCP riggers. If you have it, you're in the candidate pool. If you don't, you're not.
  2. Increases your day rate. ETCP-certified riggers typically command $100-200/day more than non-certified riggers doing the same work.
  3. Signals professionalism. It tells a production manager that you take safety seriously enough to invest in formal certification.

The honest answer

If you're a rigger who works in arenas, convention centers, or theater — yes, it's worth it. The ROI comes back within 5-10 shows in the form of higher rates and more calls.

If you're an audio or video tech who occasionally helps with rigging, it's probably not necessary. Focus on certifications in your primary discipline (AVIXA CTS for AV, Dante certification for networking, etc.).
