What it is

The X32 Compact is the smaller-footprint sibling of the full X32. Same DSP engine (40 input channels, 25 mixing buses, 32-bit floating point processing), same MIDAS preamps (16 local), same AES50 expansion ports, but in a 16-fader form factor that fits in a normal road case and weighs half what the full console does.

Who it's for

The default working-pro digital console for clubs, mid-size touring, houses of worship, AV companies, and theatre. If you don't need 32 faders in front of you, the Compact gives you the entire X32 ecosystem at a more practical size.

Spec highlights

  • 40 input channels, 25 mixing buses, 8 DCAs
  • 16 local MIDAS preamps + 6 aux line + 2 AES50 ports for digital snake expansion
  • 16 motorized 100mm faders + dedicated bank navigation
  • Full X32 routing matrix, FX rack (8 stereo engines), Klark Teknik dynamics + EQs
  • 32×32 USB audio interface
  • Touchscreen + dedicated channel strip section
  • Talkback with dedicated mic preamp
  • Stagebox compatible: SD16, SD8, S16, DL16/32 over AES50

Real-world notes

The X32 ecosystem is the X32's biggest strength. Whatever stagebox brand you're working with — Klark Teknik, MIDAS DL, Behringer S/SD — they all talk AES50 to this console out of the box. That makes road kit easier: one console, swap the stagebox for the venue.

The motorized faders track scene recalls cleanly, channel strip selection is fast, and the touchscreen is responsive enough for everyday use. The X32 app and X32-Edit desktop software are mature and free.

It's been on the market long enough that there's a deep ecosystem of third-party tools, online communities, and presets. If you have a problem, someone has already solved it on a forum.

Long-term reliability has been solid in our experience. The cable retainer on the AES50 ports is the weak link — use locking CAT5 patches if the console travels.

Bottom line

After more than a decade on the market, the X32 Compact is still the sensible default for a working-pro digital mixer in this size. The new Wing has more channels and better processing, but for most working AV techs the X32 Compact is what you actually need at a fraction of the cost.

Pros

  • +Full X32 DSP and routing — only the surface is smaller
  • +16 MIDAS preamps locally + AES50 expansion to 96+ channels
  • +Mature ecosystem: software, apps, third-party tools, forum support
  • +32×32 USB audio interface for virtual sound check and recording
  • +Motorized faders track scenes cleanly

Cons

  • 10+ year old design — touchscreen is small by modern standards
  • Only 16 faders in front of you — bank a lot for big shows
  • AES50 cable retainers are flimsy; use locking patches for road work
